What to Wear to Your First Horseback Riding Lesson (And What We Provide)

Wondering what to wear to your child's first riding lesson? This practical guide covers the essentials, what to avoid, and what Hussar Stables provides for free.

Booking your child's first horseback riding lesson is an exciting milestone! However, as the day approaches, many parents in Palmdale and Lancaster find themselves asking the same question: "What exactly should they wear?"

You want your child to be safe and comfortable, but you also don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on specialized equestrian gear before you even know if they like the sport.

The good news is that you probably already have most of what you need in your closet. At Hussar Stables, we provide the most critical safety equipment for your Intro Lesson.

Here is a practical, budget-friendly guide on how to dress your child for their first ride, what to avoid, and what we provide to keep them safe.

The Essentials: What You Need to Bring

For your child's first few lessons, the focus is entirely on safety and preventing chafing. You do not need to buy professional riding breeches or tall leather boots yet.

Long Pants (The Golden Rule)

Your child must wear long pants. Riding saddles are made of leather, and the friction of the stirrup leathers rubbing against bare skin will quickly cause painful chafing and pinching.

The best options are leggings, yoga pants, or thick, stretchy cotton pants. They should be relatively form-fitting so they don't bunch up and cause wrinkles under the leg. Shorts, skirts, and dresses are strictly prohibited for safety reasons. Avoid slippery materials like nylon track pants. While jeans are acceptable for the very first lesson, the thick inner seam can rub the inside of the knee uncomfortably, so leggings are usually a better choice.

Closed-Toe Shoes with a Small Heel

Footwear is the second most critical safety item. The shoe must protect the foot if a horse accidentally steps on it, and it must prevent the foot from sliding entirely through the stirrup iron.

A sturdy boot with a distinct, low heel (about 1 inch) is ideal. A paddock boot, a Chelsea boot, or even a sturdy rain boot with a heel works well. Sneakers, tennis shoes, sandals, Crocs, and UGG boots are strictly prohibited. Sneakers are dangerous because they lack a heel and are often too wide, making them prone to getting stuck in the stirrup.

A Comfortable, Weather-Appropriate Top

A fitted t-shirt or a polo shirt works well. In cooler weather, layer with a fitted sweater or a light jacket that can be easily removed. Avoid excessively baggy shirts, long scarves, or hoodies with strings. Loose clothing can get caught on the saddle or the horse's tack, and flapping fabric can spook a nervous horse.

Hair Ties

If your child has long hair, it must be tied back. A low ponytail or a braid is best, as a high bun or topknot will interfere with the fit of the riding helmet.

What Hussar Stables Provides

We understand that investing in safety gear before your child's first ride is daunting. That is why we provide the most important, specialized equipment for all Intro Lessons and early-level riders.

ASTM/SEI Certified Riding Helmets. A properly fitted, certified equestrian helmet is non-negotiable. Bicycle helmets, skateboard helmets, or ski helmets are not acceptable substitutes, as they are not designed to withstand the specific impact of a fall from a horse. We maintain a fully stocked library of clean, certified riding helmets in various sizes. Our instructors will personally fit the helmet to your child's head before they ever approach a horse.

All Necessary Horse Tack. You do not need to worry about providing saddles, bridles, or grooming supplies. Our lesson horses are outfitted with high-quality, custom-fitted English dressage and jumping tack, which promotes the correct classical balance and position from day one.

When Should You Buy Your Own Gear?

If your child completes their Intro Lesson and decides to join a Hussar Stables membership, you will eventually want to invest in their own gear. We recommend starting with paddock boots (the first purchase you should make), then half chaps, then riding breeches or tights, and finally a personal helmet.

We are always happy to recommend local tack shops or online retailers and help you ensure any new gear fits correctly.

The most important thing to bring to your first lesson is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!
